Biophilia was born from the belief that meaningful design emerges when people and nature are reconnected with intention, sensitivity, and respect. Founded by Chamara Wijesinghe, Biophilia is a multidisciplinary design practice grounded in the philosophy that nature is not an external element to be added, but an essential partner in shaping humane and resilient environments. Chamara’s background in art, culture, architecture, and landscape architecture has shaped a deep sensitivity to place, ecology, and human experience. Inspired by natural systems, seasonal rhythms, and living landscapes, Biophilia translates these values into climate-responsive, practical, and human-centered design solutions.
The practice bridges Asian contextual wisdom with European particularly Scandinavian design thinking, blending clarity, restraint, innovation, and ecological responsibility. Operating between Colombo and Copenhagen, Chamara is a Chartered Landscape Architect and Green Building Consultant in Sri Lanka, and a practicing Landscape Architect (MDL), member of the Danish Landscape Association. His work focuses on sustainable and innovative solutions, with a strong emphasis on climatic and seasonal responsiveness, long-term environmental performance, and human-friendly design. Biophilia is powered by a diverse team of architects, landscape architects, interior architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, plant scientists, product designers, and curators, working collaboratively toward a more biophilic, sustainable, and future-ready world.

Committed to city planning ventures, Biophilia is engaged in different projects spanning the following areas: Hotels and restaurants, residential and apartment complexes, office and industrial spaces, and public spaces. Biophilia (Pvt) Ltd is all about innovation, production, utility and atmosphere, whether it is outdoor or indoor. We focus on merging the correct element with the precise color and using the best possible product that will increase the comfort of the consumer.
At Biophilia, we grow and maintain a large number of tropical plant species while ensuring significant diversity and quantity of quality plants in different cities of the country. All the nurseries are well managed and maintained by a qualified staff with the help of new technology.
Research
We are committed to holistic research about trees, the environment, and sustainable practices while reserving a space for emerging plant researchers’ efforts.
Future
An Arboretum and organic farm are in the planning stage, to aid in our conservation projects and the environment. We will also expand into exports while strengthening our partnerships with nurseries.
